Hi Judas, they are certainly not cheap. That kind of price tag sounds correct, if it comes from a top dealer and depending on the type of cap. I would expect that an Officers schirmutze (visor cap) would command that much, whereas a Feldmutze would be less.
As regards to if it is too much to pay, well every collector has to decide if he or she can justify that kind of money on their hobby. But prices seem to rise year by year and what was once considered expensive can soon become a bargain a few years down the road.

Here is a benchmark for SS officer caps, about as good as it gets: a red-piped (artillery) SS crusher for $8250 from a respectable dealer.

The way things are going its hard to keep up with prices but i am in agreement with what Ade has said above, only you as an individual can decided if the price is right, it is an ever shrinking market do not forget that, some of these prices seem high now but in a few years they may well be looked upon as cheap who knows,
Some years ago I paid £1850.00 for a 1st pattern ss smock in near mint condition, at a time when smocks were £350-650 in price, I was told i was mad and why?, well because I liked it and that is what the dealer wanted for it.

SS Visor Prices
Good evening gentleman, ladies? just in case
I would like to know who set this increase for SS visors??? : / About 2 years ago these visor were priced at around $3000 for Officers and about 1500 to 18 for NCO… I know for a fact that the same visors sold for $2500 for officers and about 1100 or 1200 for NCO in 1991-92… This is over ten years ago! (( Average increase of 5 or 600 dollars over ten years ))… Now its triple the price??????? Over a 2 & 3 year period?????? I can understand a couple hundred but triple in two years! I know we all set our own limits but somebody is getting rich here? It’s a little ridiculous, in my book SS officers cap should only be worth about 3500 to 4 big ones, yes this is still lots of dough but much more realistic… Back to my main concern , who comes up with these prices? ( these caps are not getting any rarer they just keep rotating from collection to collection ) so that does not justify triple the price in two years? So what do you folks think

As you said, same hats (fixed number of real ones) more collectors. It's simply supply and demand.. the same thing happened with guns. And the biggest driver of prices.....the MOVIES! After SPR the price of an M1 Garand or Carbine almost doubled. The same holds true for other forms of militaria. A guy see's it in the movie so he wants it at home.

I generally agree with the historical prices that you cite, maybe 2 years ago the prices of W-SS officer cap were closer to $4000+ than $3000. I agree with Gary's comments above. If you really look at most militaria prices you will find a 8 to 10 fold price increase over the last 20 years. This is especially true of SS items (daggers,uniforms, insignia, HR Rings, swords...etc...) but is also reflected (more or less) with everything else. Remember the 8 to 10 times factor and take a look for yourself. One could buy if they could find (it was still very hard, I looked for 5 years!) an original W-SS officers cap in the the early/mid 1980s for $700 to $900. I also have a SS officers 'crusher' cap that is NOT "mint", but I would not consider selling it for less than $12000. That price (right now) may seem crazy, but it is not even that close to what some dealers have sold like examples for. I would never replace it for 12k. It is simply the practical reality of this hobby.Comment

Ultimately, it is we the collectors who set the prices. The dealer's can ask whatever price they want, but if no one buys it then the dealer will start asking less. Prices may vary a little from dealer to dealer, but one thing never changes and that is a dealer is going to charge as much as he thinks he can possibly sell and item for, this hobby is a business. The only time a dealer is going to give a break on the price of an item is if the condition is poor, or something is missing or broken, etc...Currently, in the area of W-SS visors Bill Shea has a nice Officer's with white piping listed at $7800. If the sweatband wasn't as damaged he would be selling it for more. I recently sold my W-SS Officer's visor to a dealer for $8000. A good friend of mine just sold a W-SS General's Visor for over $20,000. Now, there are also several W-SS Officer's visor's on another dealer's site, including a General's Visor at $4200 (approx.). You can draw your own conclusions...Based on personnal experiences, I have made my own conclusions about the 'going' price of a white-piped W-SS officer's visor ($6000-$10,000). Good Luck! That looks to be a very nice example. I am not surprised that you sold it for what you did, even to a dealer. I would venture to say that you will be hard pressed to ever replace that hat for that amount unless you turn one up out of the 'woodwork'. Really they are in the same price range of M36 SS daggers and one will find 20 (or more) M36 daggers for every real W-SS officers peak cap.
You are right that collectors set the prices based on what they are and are not willing to pay. I refused to pay the $1500 prices demanded of cased Knights Crosses 20 years ago. I thought this was crazy as these crosses could be found for around $400 just 10 or 12 years earlier.
I still do not one and it will easily cost me $10,000 to $12,000 for the type that I am looking for. Really I'm out of the game at those prices...probably and I'll never own one. I actually did own one for 24 hours in 1985, but I could not justify the the outlandish price ($1500 cased) and I sold it.Comment
