    Interesting thought Michael.

I might stir things up but I am of those of those who believe the boxes are genuine.But.....not as a MK box.In my opinion that is just collector talk.
They could be used for the same reason as mine and Steve's.
Or as memento box for fallen soldiers, feldpost or other documents.

I have seen once in a great flemish collection a cardboard box with almost the same size and with runes on it that apparently were sold to keep letters.

Sure, such wooden boxes were in use - a special cardboard box version as a presentation piece for those who received the Ritterkreuz in the Waffen-SS was once sold by Hermann Historica.

These wooden RK cardboard boxes were designed by Karl Diebitsch.

Why is the bottom plywood? And what's up with the random holes drilled in it? Salvaged from something else?

          *

I also saw the holes in the bottom and laughed, as in 3 pages of praise for this box nobody mentioned them

The box is definately old, but appears to have been maybe a music box to begin with.

            Guys,

The holes were intended for the screws that kept the inlay in his place.

            But thanks for your interest
