In various lighting conditions you me be able to make out "Alteste...." on the diamond as the cap is a ringer for this type!

I thought so too. The course grey lining (although not as course as some
others I've seen) gives it away.

Tom and Brian, appreciate the comments. Dave I've taken the cap outside and twisted and turned it everyway, but it's just too worn out to try and make out any maker on the plastic diamond - thanks for the good idea though.

The cap was gift so I'll hold onto it anyway until the real one comes along one day. Still looks pretty cool amongst my military collection.

Well if it's free you're well away! You never know, some information could pop up and condem this cap as a rare variant

Both, the skull, and the eagle are absolutely pathetic reproductions, compared to the originals and the high quality fakes.
Still, they look great for display, especially when they are free.
