I know this is a messed with cap trying to be something that it's not, but what was it originally?

Paul, these Alteste caps are well made, often using original wartime materials and some are quite old - like 1940's-1950's old so show good age. Lot's of threads on them in the headgear section, but they make good representative pieces, IMO.

But they are considered post-war - looks like a good aged example of one you have there!

Yes as mentioned Postwar made with no affiliation to an original orgination. But still decent quality and could be a filler or conversational piece.
