SS 4 & 8 Year Long Servive Awards web ...

    Hi folks,

    <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

I’ve just added a new web page section relating to the 4 & 8 Year SS Service Awards.

I was fortunate enough to have obtained two SS Long Service Awards made from the two known manufacturers, so I decided to write an article relating to the “4 & 8 Year Long Service Awards.”

This effort relating to the 4 & 8 year SS awards could not have been done without the contribution provided by all members and especially from the brothers Keifer and Steve Kahn, who are also working on a web project relating to SS Long Service Awards.

    <o></o>

Here is the web page: http://axis101.bizland.com/SSawards1.htm

    Enjoy

    Nice job Rene!

However, I double checked my 4 and 8 year service medals, (both Deschlers),
and I believe that there has been a mistake in one of the most common measurement rules, that should be looked into and corrected.
I believe the common Deschler 4 and 8 year service medal diameter is 37 mm,
    instead of 38 mm.

Mr. Kahn, and anyone else who has these, please check this closely and let us know. I am sure that mine are 37 mm and I am sure that they are real.
There may also be a 38.5 mm, (or maybe it's 37.5 mm), as well, but I haven't seen one of these yet and I do not know if this applies to Deschler.

    Best, Chris

      Hi Rene,
Ill drop you a line soon.Your site is coming along nicely.

      Hi Chris,
Are you using calipers to measure your medals?
Dont use a ruler. You really cant accurately measure medals with a ruler.
      All genuine 4/ 8 years i have handled measured 38mm or 38.5.
38mm is also the measurement noted by period publications and many modern authors.
If you check alot of the old threads on here you will see all the genuine ones identified as such are noted to be 38-38.5 mm(4 and 8 years) .
I checked Steves files and out of 30 documented originals, not one was under 38mm.
The collectors guild has 4 and 8 year medals for sale at the moment quoted as being 1 1/2 inches(38mm).
As for 38.5mm types,Dan kelly sold one a few months back.

Also Chris,I have seen the pics of your 8 year(steve has it still on file) and it is definately original but i would recheck it with calipers.I remember Tony Barto sold this too you and in past correspondences with Tony he informed me all of his 8 years he had owned were 38mm.
If you have ever seen any full scale size photos of these you can measure the ribbon as the standard 35mm and the medal 3mm bigger at 38mm.or additionally 3.5mm bigger for the 38.5mm size medals.

www.dasreich.co.uk has at the moment 2 very original looking, Deschlers. Both are quoted as being 38.5mm.

Snyders treasures have an original deschler quoted at 1 1/2 inches(38mm).

I really wouldnt get caught up in sizes.Time and research is showing there is no one strict size and there are obviously 2 sizes for originals.Look at iron crosses, they are found in 43mm,44mm,45mm,46mm and 47-48mm for ubergrosse crosses. Why should ss medals be restricted to one size.

The only reason i suggest you remeasure is the simple fact that, with all the originals owned and measured by collectors and dealers, none are seen at 37mm.

      regards Keifer

        Hi Keifer,
I'm glad you like the info. posted on the 4 & 8 year SS service awards.

        Hi Chris,
Glad you also like the info.
I need to re-check the measurement but I believe it is 38mm in diameter and I used calipers as my measuring instrument.

I will recheck the measurements and let you know.
Also, are you sure the Das Reich website still has the SS medals listed?
          I can't find them.
          Thanks!
          Chris

            Hi Chris,
My apologies, the two medals are old listings that i kept as favourites.Try these url,s,
            www.dasreich.co.uk/oa063_ss_8year.htm
            www.dasreich.co.uk/oa001_ss_8year.htm

I think once you see these you will seee your own 8 year staring back.

Thank you very much, Mr. Kahn!

If I could ask one more question for you and everyone else.
Did any of the originals have numbers or any markings on the tear drop rings?
I heard of one that had a number on the ring, but never saw one.
Do you think that this would mean fake, for sure?

              Thanks! Chris
