Regarding the WSS in particular, I have seen many images showing the standard mantel/greatcoat being worn in front line combat operations. Since the blanket lined wachtmantel appears essentially the same externally but designated as a gaurd coat, is it possible to see any wachtmantel being worn by front line combat soldiers or were they strictly used only as a guard coat in a static position?

It is hard to see the difference on pictures. I really think wachmantels were worn on the frontline. (What would you do if it was a cold Russian night and you could lay your hand on a thicker mantel?

indeed, whatever one was wearing at the time, and the hotter the better in that cold. Or did you expect the following:
"oh there are the Russians, please give me a few minutes to switch to a lighter coat!"Comment

I have seen US Army photos of surrendering Germans where the Wachtmantel is clearly seen. In most pictures it is hard to differentiate between these and the standard overcoats.Comment

Your replies mirror my thoughts in general. I have been particularly wondering regarding the start of the Ardennes offensive if it has been observed in photos, or at least highly likely, that a wachtmantel would have been worn in lieu of a standard mantel by a front line SS soldier. So it seems to be a concensus this would be a reasonable assumption for that time and location?Comment
