The drawings in both of the references show the green underlay for ranks above SS, but not for SS-Mann. How certain are we that the boards wth all black cords are indeed SD and not some form of police anwarter rank?

      Ah with you now sir!
I believe they are verbally described as shown - black cords with toxic green wool underlay. This is correct for sd/sichetheitspolizie.
I would expect to see general police branch boards to have very dark brown not black.

          Thank you for your input.

If I interpret your answers correctly, Mollo's description infers no exceptions for SD-Mann, and his illustrator or publisher apparently missed adding the green underlay to the illustration. Angolia's verbal description does not specifically address SD-Mann. He refers to black inner cords without mentioning outer cords, thus allowing the reader to use his knowledge of police ranks to determine outer cord color. The illustrator simply relied on Mollo's earlier illustrations to be correct and repeated the incorrect information.

In other words, the reference material is in error. This has been my thought, but I was hoping for confirmation.

            Well....
The illustrations in mollo are vertical shots straight down - and black and white line drawings. From above, on ss Mann sd boards you cannot see the toxic green underlay. In this they are acurate. Only a profile drawing would be able to illustrate it. On the higher ranking sd nco boards, you can often see the underlying green backing but only where the cordage doesn't cover it.
Unlike regular waffen SS boards the sd nco boards do not feature waffenfarbe outer piping - perhaps this is why he missed out the 'outer cord' colour.
I agree not the clearest in the text at times
