Expensive but real, try finding another like it that isn't like the five or six that have been floating around.

What a splendid article. On this one the three digit code has a small font. There are wraps on marshals baton and PVL's site where the three digit code has a very large font, much larger than the other markings. Is there any significance to this?

Scott, by the pictures shown on that site I do not agree with your statement.

Luca, which site are you referring to? Please take a look at the second to last picture of Mr. Davis is wrapper, The area which shows a close-up of the Small wool attachments for the interior buttons.

IMO not at all, makers used what they had available. Different fonts and sizes were used for the same category of items. For instance: Oak winter toque...or wrappers (or many other items).

Not that I know much about wrappers but the one that started this thread gives me concerns.

                        Cheers

                          no question

I can see no issues or red flags with the wrap. Just to clarify, I started this thread because I wanted others to enjoy the wrap like I did.

Fritz, the wrapper that started this thread if you held it in hand I dont think you would find any issue with. I have one which is quite similar, and have studied it, as well as numerous late war SS pieces, be they wrappers, great coats, or M43s and find the construction, quality of construction, materials and all important details to be right as rain. Have I held Mr Davis wrap in hand? No, however, I would love to, and I feel confident in doing such I would be of the same opinioin. This is the second 627 wrapper that I have seen in 10 years. Compare that with the half dozen or MORE of the wrappers, all sturmgeschutz SS I might add, which have appeared in the past 7 or 8 years, have bounced around from dealer to dealer, and are all IMO lacking for more than a few reasons. I have yet in collecting to see ANY mid/late war M43 SS tunic, wrapper, or dot jacket, or winter for that matter, which exhibits these large fonts, that I believe is real. I will keep an open mind, and if anyone has one to show, I would gladly examine in person. Keep in mind these SS field grey wraps are probaby next in line in terms of rarity to good SS face veils.

Factor also into the hopper the plethora of fake SS covers, as discussed by numerous SS collectors who KNOW these covers (I am not one of them) and you can see that there is every incentive to produce high quality fakes of this an other SS pieces, just as there has always been. Unissued SS Saharinas are also no popping up ALL OVER THE PLACE, and I have found but a few that I feel comfortable with. Recognize a pattern?

The wrapper in question is unissued, which right off the bat will scare many collectors, as did my wrapper, which is also unissued, and posts can be found of it on the forum here. Yet, I still receive emails from SS collectors who we all know who have offered good money for it, I am not interested in selling mine, as I do feel it is one of the real pieces out there. Does that validate mine as real? Certainly not, but those that have issues with these 627 wrappers have most likely never looked one over.

From what I see, I would have no issue owning the wrapper Mr. Davis is offering, that is not a sales pitch, it does reflect however my experience with these items, which is more than many big time dealers out there today, who routinely sell bogus wares of all types, from SS tunics to insignia. Most dealers are collectors who have decided for financial reasons to turn their hobby/passion into a business. They are not knighted by anyone, and have the same experience or lack thereof as collectors. They dont get a degree in this stuff, or possess a silver bullet as to knowledge, although many have inside tracks on what is being "produced" The longer I collect, the more obvious it becomes that many dealers know squat about some of the items they are selling. Many are honest, many others are not, just as in any business. I don't endorse a dealer, except to the extent that I think him to be realiable WHEN you have an issue with a piece, each piece must stand and fall on its own merits regardless of who is hawking it.

P.S. I hope Mr Davis does not post more details of the wrap but to a serious buyer, as in doing so, the fakes would improve. Proof that they have not yet lies in the issues lacking in the current fakes.
