    collar tab pips

    All,
I have never been able to identify the difference between fake and original collar tab pips.
I see what appear to be brass, silver or aluminum. Did all pips have brass prongs or also aluminum prongs? I have couple of very detailed but thin alumimum pips that also have very soft aluninum clip point prongs.
Can someone post what original collar pips should look like?
    Thanks much,

    CB

There are very few fake collar tabs. Real pips from the TR period have flat clip point prongs made from both aluminum, brass and copper. It would do little good to post a picture of real pips as there are way too many varieties. I would stay away from pips with round prongs however.

Absolute rot? I think not. Many thousands???? Originals are plentiful, what would be the point. Perhaps you should monitor the Oakleaf Militaria website to see if there are any over there.

I'm sure he will have an original sooner or later.

Thanks all, I have seen so many varieties of pips that I cant tell what is good and what is bad.
So I am to take it that fake pips are actually rather scarce in relation to good ones.
As I mentioned, mine are quite small and quite soft aluminum (which I questioned), but very detailed.

                        Pips

Not all non WW2 pips are fake. Germany continued to produce and use them as rank designation well into the 70s. Just look for the flat pin made into the pip that looks period and you should be safe. Post war have round pins and fake ones have pins that are crimped. Original ones the pins go inside of the pip itself

                          Pips

Pips are an interesting topic. Here are four sets that I believe to be real, the second phot showing the type most often seen on Allgemeine SS Uniforms.
