That's indeed what is lacking (rolled edge) and I agree...
Here's my (partial) SS hat...note crown, but still could be period SS, just not text book...

Personally I believe we are too precious about 'textbook' when it comes to this type of item ... all components are original and seem to be worn together .. the rib of the seam on the front has rubbed that eagle if you notice.

As A VW Bus owner I remember seeing the pen 'W' which looks like a VW badge before somewhere ?

Can someone post the top photo before the thread disappears from the sale. I'm on my iPhone and I don't know how to do it yet.

Here is the Kreigsmarine with what I believe is the false piping, so what does this mean now.

...no its not SS mounted as KM ...look close.
Totaly different. In lets say 95% the SS. had the rolled edge as a standard, although the other type is also seen on original SS. Side caps. I prefer the rolled edge, but I have the others too in my collection.

Is it that the false piping doesn't overlap on the SS false piping in the front like a Y and the KM does?

We can see exactly the same on Luftwaffe overseas caps, more with rolled edge and a few without.
Don't know why but it's like that

From what I can see it is an ss issued cap, but with insignia that is not the first set that has been sewn onto that cap. - So, IMO, a restored cap.

                    Cheers

                      Side cap .

I rather stay by the standart production for the SS, like the "Clemens Wagner" aus Braunsweig, whoe's got always the (rolled edges), facing the V construction, and comporting the first type of eagle and totenkopf (hand seewed), my opignion !!!
                      Regards,
                      W.P.

in this case the sewing thread on the "false" piping is the main one looker difference to separate SS cut from other cut.

By the way we have a lot of pictures where SS dressed different side cap cut... but for a SS collector is a no- sense to income these pieces without provenance and photo evidence.
                        imo.

                          Dear All,

Many thanks to all for your input.

I am a bit confused but nevertheless the eagle, skull and cap are original but if they belong together is an other question.

                          Again thanks

                          Best regards,

                          Rene

I'd recommend you not to pay more than what a restored cap is worth.

C Wagner, G Teufel, Smidt and Maenner all of them manufactured textbook examples. Here is two examples with the piping, not clear but it is
