SS 12 Year Long Service Award for Review

    Hi All
I had posted this in the Heer/ SS Award forum but figured I would post here as well. It looks like it may have a chance but know that these are heavily faked. The seller told me that the suspension loop had been bent by the previous owner. Any help is greatly appreciated!

      My 2 cents

Better pics would help but.....it does show some promise. Does not seem to have much of the original frosting left and the base metal is showing through in some areas. I believe originals should be die struck...beware of castings. Again I think it could be a good one but wait for more opinions.

      Best,

      KM

More and better pictures are needed. Stands a chance IMO.

We are definitely going to need much better pictures of this one...nothing immediately jumps out as being like any of the known fakes. If it is real, it has some really strange wear patterns on it...all four corners look as if they have been whacked with a hammer and I had originally thought that the eyelet had been filed down (like we see so often on fakes of this medal) to give the appearance of a bevel, but it also looks like it has had the hammer treatment. The only explanation I can think of for this wear pattern on an original is that someone didn't know it was original and tried to artificially age it...unlikely I know, but stranger things have happened.

I also notice that there is a certain 'die flaw' on this piece which can be found on quite a high percentage of original 12 & 25 year examples...the more accurate cast fakes seem to only have been cast from a Non-die flawed example.

I don't like it at all. The ring looks like a round ring that was badly "reshaped" to look like the typical SS oval ring.

The new pics are still pretty bad, but apart from the condition I see nothing wrong with it.

I must say that even if the quality often were quite poor (thinking of what it was – 12 years in the SS!) this look too soft and "unsharp" to me.
