SS camouflage worn by HG question

    Hi,
I've tried searching (limited success) but am just wondering if anyone has the definitive answer as to what types of SS camouflage were issued to Hermann Goring troops.

What I seem to have gleaned from trawling various forums:-

Helmet covers and smocks issued from July 1942 to limited numbers of HG troops (10-20%) - not re-issued again, but worn until re-supplied with other camouflage/ kit wore out. Believe mainly Plane tree 1/2, Plane tree 3/4, possibly some Palm - not so much Oak leaf if any? Helmet covers Type 1 (no foliage loops).

Can anyone verify/ correct the above?

You wont find an answer to your query but there there may be a photo or two of HG div wearing SS camo lurking in it? and a Interesting thread anyhow if you have not seen it!

Actually it's a pretty rare polyspot variant.

              Cheers

Not really a "correction" as polyspot is considered to be a plane tree variant - just a pretty rare variant.

                  Cheers

                        Oakleaf? Type 1 helmet covers?

Many thanks for the feedback and photo - I should have added Blurred edge as I did see some out there on my net-trawl !

http://forum.axishistory.com/viewtopic.php?t=131185 - some nice pics here!

Found a quote ref Oakleaf on this thread:- http://www.feldgrau.net/forum/viewto...p?f=52&t=20834

"According to Rolf Michaelis in his book "Die Waffen-SS, Uniformen und Abzeichen", Michaelis-Verlag, Berlin, 2001, over 5000 pieces of SS oakleaf pattern camouflage clothing were taken by the Hermann Goring Division in spring 1943, at its muster, and used to equip the Panzer Grenadier, Pionier (engineer), and Aufklarungs (reconnaissance) units of that division."

                        Perhaps they got the lot!

My theory is that the entire thing was based on a trade deal with the ss. The Luftwaffe gave paratrooper related stuff (jump smocks, helmets etc..) for the ss paratrooper units and the ss, in return, gave smocks and covers.

I don't see why an oak cover or smock could not have been among those items that were given to the LW. Although it seems that some smaller units sometimes received homogenous camo items (for instance, all men received blurred edge M42 type 2 camo smocks).

As a side note: Oak type 1 covers and oak smocks are relatively scarce in the first place.

                          Cheers

                            Greetings,
I seem to recall seeing a photo of HG Soldiers that were captured in Tunisia wearing Oakleaf Smocks. I do not recall the type of helmet covers they were wearing. Sincerely, DJB
