This image shows French POW's collecting trash in a German city during the war.

Such metal trash cans (garbage recepticles, rubbish/waist bins)
are typical for the period (square or round) and an ownership stamp is not unheard of at all.
They'll typically have side and top handles for easy lifting and tipping.
I am also a believer!
