    44 dot camo infantry boards...

    I should have posted this here first and am on a extrememly slow computer so I will fix it later.....

    I was recently looking over a pair of 44 dot trousers I have and noticed something in the back pocket I did not notice before. I unbuttoned the back pocket and grabbed what I thought was a hanky. To my suprise I pulled out a pair of SS camo infantry boards. I bought the camo set from a vets son and the set has been deemed real by many well known collectors and I cannot find a flaw myself. He obviously did not know about the boards in the back pocket either. The reason the pair was in the back pocket is that the tunic it came with was not set up for shoulder boards.

    Well my question is how rare are these? I do not have access to my camera at this time but will get pics up in a few hours.

    i was always under the impression that dot camo boards were fantasy peices, but i could be wrong.

        Hi Elvis,

        IMO you need to avoid these. There were numbers of pairs in the UK 10-15 Years ago. In all my 30 years collecting I have never seen these pictured in any publication on the WSS both period and recent, and believe me I have studied most books on the Waffen SS. Incidentally Gary Wood has a pair of Original WSS straps on which the underlay is pea pattern material, this is much more in keeping with factory production using material scraps to underlay the boards. He may post a shot of said strap if he reads this post. I would also avoid the trousers you found the straps in, guilt by association I believe!!

          Don't say that about the trousers. They are officially mine now. No chance of going back. I will repost some pics of the set a little later. They were deemed good before. The boards on the other hand are not appealing to me so much anymore. I pulled some thread and they balled up when burnt. Also I burnt the waffenfarbe and it turned hard. Oh well.

            This photo is from a Janke fake of a panzer jacket. Look at the button holes and the same button holes at the straps you have. Fakes without question.

              Fake Camouflage ss boards have been around for years and years and have been made by more than one faker over that period, some with original cloth some with fake DOT, some might and have said in the past that they could be field made originals, I am not one of those believers, your examples have a proper button hole in them with the gimp cord, the machine that would do this is a specialist machine, and expensive even in the period, this machine only does this "button holes", and it was not something that the company tailors had.

              I have seen other fake cammo boards with a slit button hole, this type of button hole is made by attaching a special foot to the sewing machine, this method was used period but also appears on many fakes as well.

              Guess what I am trying to say is Sorry I do not like your shoulder straps, below is a strap that Mark H mentioned above.

                    Fake camo shoulderboards showed up in the mid 70s. A dealer from Germany brought a bunch over, I am pretty sure he was also involved in faking them. Everyone bought a pair or two and then gradually the truth came out. Are there any actual period pictures showing them in use? I've never seen one but would be curious to know if anyone has.

                      No I have never seen any pictures of camouflage shoulder straps being worn, and on another note why would they produce them?????, it was only the very early waffen-ss camouflage jackets that came originally with shoulder strap loops, most HBT jacket came without shoulder loops although these were added by individuals in the field so they could wear there standard shoulder straps, but most photos of this jacket in use you can see the absence of loops on the shoulder, so why produce a camouflage shoulder strap!
