    Reproduction Insignia

    Hello again.

That first post I sent was incomplete for some reason.

Anyway, as I started saying, I'm brand new on the forum and have a small but nice collection I've been working on over the years.

Due to funds, many of the authentic examples I'd love to obtain are essentially out of my reach, but I still enjoy looking at them on this forum.

My favorite thread so far has been the lengthly SS skull and eagle one, which illustrated many fine examples of authentic pieces. Very, very informative and was good to see what some of the original pieces looked like.

On a related note, are there any well-made reproductions fabricated using original dies? The example I'd especially like to get my hands on would be a metal cap skull.

Any insight on such a request?

Thanks for your help, and great forum!
    Jim

    Welcome to the forum!

I don't know about original dies for use in making repros, but I'd recommend saving your money and buying originals. Start small, study this and other venues of research, study some more, and buy originals.

If you MUST buy repros, buy the repros that come up on the estand in the Bazaar section...

stay away from eBay, as you'll get much better quality and believable reproduction Tk's here on e-stand, not the garbage they sell on eBay

I agree with the advice for saving for an authentic, nice specimen, but in the meantime I'd be quite intrigued to locate a 'reissue' piece struck from one of the original dies, if such an example exists.

It would seem there would be a die or two remaining, and someone still stamping pieces using that equipment.

Are there indeed any original dies still out there, and still being used?

          Interesting thoughts...

I have seen a couple of websites that say they offer an SS skull struck from the original die. 1944militaria.com is one, and there is some outfit that calls their skulls "post war originals" because they are struck postwar from the original die.

But I am in no way qualified to judge how convincing these "perfect copies" really are.

Buying repros is not my advice either but since you asked, IMHO the only repro W-SS insignia that is damn close to the originals and no other repro seller comes even close concerning quality is sold at

                  Interesting site, Obergruppen2! Thanks.

I guess my fascination (other than with the real thing, which I'm still saving and researching for) would be something post-war that was actually struck using an authentic die.

I certainly know it would not be the real deal, but it just seems if you had a repop or two in your collection, it would be pretty nifty to have one with that sort of DNA.

                  Anyway, thanks again.

                      Nice image, Obergruppen2!

Do you think that skull was made using one of those original dies I spoke of?

                      Thanks again for your help,

I do not believe that actual original dies are being used to manufacture any SS cap insignia currently offered as reproduction.
