On SS camo reversible hats, some have machined vents and some have the usual metal ones like tropical hats. When in the war did it change or manufacturer variations?

It seems that the first issued type was the one without vent holes. Machine sewn vent holes seem to have appeared around the same time when metal grommets were first used for vent holes. So it is most likely not an improvement but rather some detail owed to availability among the various makers.
