Müller made beautiful and outstanding quality pieces like this one within and after the period.

I know nothing of the origins of this letter opener but found a mention of it in the following link when by chance while searching Google for "Third Reich items made to deceive."

The Himmler Presentation Letter Opener is mentioned down the page I landed on under the heading "Edged Weapons", third paragraph.

              not very well done
or could that be shrinkage ??
              cheers

The ss button does look like its been ill fitted and possibly glued back in ?

Looks like good damascus steel. Not seen many blades but have handled a few damascus barreled shotguns at Game Fairs years ago.

The time and effort that goes into forging damascus steel, would be a little over kill for a fake or repro ??

Try soaking the blade in a jug of water overnight, see what happens !!

I doubt this is a pre or post war Mueller Damast piece, as he made pure quality.

Too many bells and whistles. Whoever made it went overboard to make this letter opener, "original". SS runes in the handle, Himmler signature on the blade, Damascus steel, Mueller markings. All in one package? I have my doubts. Per Shakespear, "The lady doth protest too much".
