    Dirty Harry. Panzer SS.

Not long ago I received these two pictures. I was told that this is very, very distant member of my family. He used to call himself Harry and his real name was Richard. Could You tell me more about his service, basing on attached pictures? I guess I can recognize "frozen meat" medal ribbon and Panzer uniform. What could be colour of piping? Picture with overseas cap is dated 15.II.43.

Well, you have said it yourself already. He is indeed a Eastern front veteran Panzer member and his Waffenfarbe would be pink on the shoulderboards and white on the visor. The first photo shows him as a Rottenführer and Uffz Anwärter, the second as a Unterscharführer; the next rank in promotion. Here he is wearing his NCO/EM Schrimmütze for walking out.

Thank You Zauberflote! I am not uniform expert but white piping on visor and pink on shoulderboards looks a little bit strange.

I believe that the colour piping to caps was phased out early on, November 1940 if I recall.

It was very common for any and all members of the panzerkorps to have white piped caps from then on.

Correct! Some officers did in fact keep wearing coloured piped caps, private purchase etc... Definitely in the minority though, so very rare!

I only know few things about this man. First is, he was nazi, true believer. Second is he wanted other people to name him Harry, though real name was Richard. Third, I guess he did some "dirty" things to counterparts, what is rather usual in the course of every war. No connection with Clint Eastwood.

Thanks for free lesson. SS uniforms is rather not my area of interest. Just beyond my range
