    Waffen-SS Sahariana Tropenhemd

    Guys,

Could you help me out on this? The shown Waffen-SS Sahariana Tropenhemd was sold at 'Third Reich Depot'. It does have a machine sewn tropical sleeveagle and a tropical chevron on the left sleeve.

Is this an original shirt and were those insignia indeed worn on the SS Saharia Tropenhemd?

    It's described as:

''Waffen-SS Tropical "Sahariana" Shirt for a Sturmmann in the Infantry. (Tropenhemd) Even though the Waffen-SS served in tropical regions of the Balkans, Greece, and southern Russia as early as 1941 tropical clothing wasn't produced until 1943. One of the most unique clothing items introduced was the "Sahariana" style shirt that was based on the Italian bush tunic. This near mint and possibly unissued shirt is constructed from tropical tan ribbed cotton. It features a four button front closure plaquet and a lay down collar. The collar is backed in a lighter weight linen with a scalloped tip and single button at the back. There are 2 pleated breast pockets below a scalloped shoulder yolk that covers the back as well. The front scalloped tips function as button down closure flaps for the breast pockets. The shoulder yoke also features 2 tunnel loops for each shoulder strap with 2 field gray pebbled zinc buttons. The infantry piped straps are so mint that I feared they may be reproductions but they appear to be constructed from period wool and sewn with 100% cotton thread (burn tested). The left sleeve features a BeVo tropical eagle and a single tropical tress stripe rank chevron. All 8 of the original tan "glass" type buttons are still intact. It does not appear as though there was ever a button sewn beneath the scalloped collar on the reverse, although there is a button hole. Over all a mint beauty with no stamps or markings other than a small "52(?)" in black ink at the neck.''

Thanks a lot in advance, cheers,

    Fleck!

I should stay away from thirdreichdepot.... Do a quick research on the forum and you will see. Almost everything they have is fake or very questionable.
I canĀ“t comment about the tunic though.

      Stay Away!

Definitely stay away from Christine Murphy and the Third Reich Depot. Most of the items on her site are fakes--lotsa Janke stuff from a cheat in PA named Wayne Davies who made-up a lot of fake stuff for Christine to sell at top dollar...occasionally you'll find a real eagle or the like sewn-on to a Janke piece and sold as original...

      just stay way!

Good to know, had my doubts about many items...
I wasn't planning to buy something there, so don't worry, but I really appreciate your warnings!

What about the tropical eagle and chevron, sewn to the Sahariana shirt sleeve? Did they use to wear insignia on these shirts?

        Thanks a lot, Fleck!

Thanks for the replies so far, but could someone comment on my actual question:

Did they use to wear the tropical sleeve eagle and/or chevrons on the Sahariana shirts?

Does someone maybe have some photo's of an original example?

So please no more replies about Third Reich Depot, that's more than clear by now! I only used that site, because it was the only example of an SS Shariana shirt with eagle and chevron on it, I could find.

              Cheers,

              Flecktarn!

Thanks for the photo's, but I meant the Sahariana Shirt, not the tunic.
I know they had those insignia on the jacket sleeves, but does that also count for the shirts?

One would assume that they did, but it would be nice to have some photo proof!

                  Thanks, Fleck!

By the regulations they were allowed to wear shoulder boards only , just found pics in Beavers book " Uniforms of the Waffen-SS " volume two, will post pics later

Thanks, would be awesome if you could post the pics!
So the book doesn't say anything about sleeveagles or chevrons been worn on the shirt?

Some shirts do have the shoulderboard 'tunnels', but some don't. That would mean they often wore blanco shirts, sometimes even without shoulderboards?

Most Luftwaffe tropical shirts for example have at least the tropical eagle on the right pocket and mostly shoulderboards too.

                      Cheers,

                      Fleck!

                            Thank you very much!
So it appears only shoulderboards were worn sometimes, at least per regulations.

Has anyone photoproof of an eagle or chevron being worn on those shirts, or can we assume that they didn't do that at all?

                            Cheers,
