how many variants of original zinc M1/72 are known?
how many pin holder types exist? Circle and rectangle or only one?

Both, circular, and rectangular crimps can be found on zinc M1/72 eagles.
The markings are placed different according to which it is.

I have just dug up one with circle crimps and I was wonder if ones with rectangle are correct too.

I happen to have a zinc variant with the round cones , but with HORIZONTAL marking . So I think both type markings can appear on the version with cones - notice the unusual round pin too . So IMHO this would make for

3 types in zinc :

Horizontal crimps / horizontal marking M1/72 ( like Cupal version )

Round cones / horizontal marking M1/72

Round cones / marking M1/72 curved downwards - only this type has visible " wing " stripes on the reverse .
