    SS Kepi

Goodmorning guys, here is a SS Kepi i've had for sometime now, looking at other threads on these, and knowing alot of these just are not around to compare.
This one has a orange oil cloth interior, which i think may be typical of these early ones, never had a front button, period photos show this as being worn.
So, what do you guys think?
    Regards,
    Gary

Also under closer examination, there is a black backing behind the skull.

Correct, not many to compare with, some kepis do have a button in front and vent holes on the sides but period pics show kepis like this one as well, it looks ok to me

            Sweet Kepi.

Regarding the TK’s eye sockets back filled with black wool of some kind thereby not having the skull have a ‘hollow’ look, in the thread below that Bob Hritz had a kepi with the TK’s eyes being backed with a red material.

Also noted Mr. Gottlieb has one of these puppies for around twelve grand. http://www.craiggottlieb.com/engine/...rman+Militaria

            Congrats Gary!!

It could well be an early Janke copy. This maker mark was used frequently in his kepi copies, and the beaded sweatband also looks like one of his earmarks.

                    Erich,

With respect, you say it “could well be an early Janke”, is there anything more you can point to other than Janke used a beaded sweatband? The maker mark was bootlegged, certainly, but so were many, many others. Wilkins, I think, mentioned Otto Schlientz was not known for military caps but were know for political.

The photo below (regarding the maker mark) I bootlegged off another site.

Can you (or anyone) show some interior shots of Janke kepis that are a match for this one?

                    Rick

It doesn't look convincing to me...

                        Kepi

I don't like the wool, or the chinstrap. The totenkopf looks artificially aged, and the cap's wear doesn't appear to match the condition of the oilcloth crown. The cap's wear looks artificially induced as well, IMHO.

Also I Believe most every german made ss kepi had a pair of bent of holes each side.. you can believe it if you like but NONE of my monies would find its way to this one...Sorry... Billbert

IMO the thickness and lay of the chinstrap is another giant red flag..particularly at the center...

                            Billbert,

Regarding grommets, I noticed the lack of them too but, hunting around, I noted in this thread (http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ts#post2217258) Bob Coleman related “IF THE FELDJAEGERKORP KEPIS CAME WITHOUT GROMMETS, I CANNOT COMMENT. I HAVE SEEN EARLY S A AND S S KEPIS WITHOUT THE VENT HOLES. THE ONES I SAW ALL HAD TIES TO AUSTRIA. HOWEVER, I CANNOT SEE ANY REASON THEY WOULD NOT HAVE THEM. THE GENERAL OFFICER ONE YOU REFERRED TO WAS LIKELY PRIVATE PURCHASE AND EXCEPTIONS COULD BE EXPECTED IN EARLY MADE PIECES.” Further in the thread an example of a higher rank SA was posted by JoeW and described as a special order piece.

(Not sure why I'm defending this - Gary, any thoughts?)

                              Kepi

Look at Post #3, where the wool is tattered at the edge of the top. The threads in the weave are too large. This does not look like correct period wool. The nap is too loose as well - period wool is much finer, IMO. The early style (non-ribbed) wool on my early allgemeine visor cap looks way different. This cap looks like someone rubbed dirt on it.
