    Ss coasters.

After seeing Lucs wonderful china I thought a little trip from the sublime to the ridiculous was in order. OK, I know what you're thinking and i probably would be too but believe It or not these are actually real. There have been fakes of these floating around for years but these are legitimate and were brought back by a British Airborne veteran.

Said veteran was Billited with a local familly after the Rhine crossing and whilst chatting to the father of the household one day the subject got round to jobs. The father explained that he had been engaged In war work In a factory that specialised In woolen Items. He then proceeded to show the veteran an unsewn Blockleiter's brassard which his factory had made. Being a typical squaddie and attracted to all things shiny he expressed his Interest In the Item and the man gave it to him, he then produced this set of coasters which he also gave to our man. They are Interesting as the wool backing and zig zag application of the silk screened front and even the thread used are IDENTICAL to thosed used In the manufacture of brassards.

last year I was lucky enough to purchase some of the veterans bring back Items and these were amongst them. Other pieces Included the aforementioned brassard, a numbered SA dagger, a Hitler Youth knife, a cased BSW pilots badge, these coasters and a bahnshutz collar patch. He told me he had also had a Luger but he threw It down a septic tank a couple of months before I got to him as he was worried about being burgled

Anyway, I thought the members here would be Intrigued to see them, as I say not up the standard of Luc's wonderful ceramics but a bit of fun none the less.

"Lützow" wasn't formed until Feb'45 ... I can't help but think that the Germans were a bit too busy at that point to manufacture souvenir coasters for units which barely existed.

I think these were perhaps produced immediately post-war to sell as souvenirs to the occupying Allied forces ?

I do seem to remember a similar roundal/coaster being made in the mid 70's and sold in gun shops here in the UK ?

Well, he was wounded right at the end of the war and these came home with him, he never returned to Germany.

I'm not disagreeing with you purposely, I'm just passing on what happened and what the told me. There were Indeed fakes made In the 70's and they were horrible. eastbourne auctions had 1 or 2 recently.

Curious how they wrote "Panzergrenadierdivision" all in one word but "Hitler Jugend" with space.
I don't know when produced, but definitely not made by a german speaking person.

I agree - I remember these being sold by The Old Curiosity Shop in Gloucester - they were sold as patches (which were very popular in the 70's) mainly to the biker fraternity. They had a tendency to distort after very much contact with water.

Just out of interest - have you blacklighted them?

Yes tom and they do not glow. I am aware of the reproductions you speak of and these are very different. For a start the reproductions were not backed on wool as far as I remember. All of the items this fellow brought back were completely legitimate so I see no reason to doubt his word on these. I can not explain the anomalies but perhaps Ians theory Is correct and they are very early pieces made for occupying forces. If that Is the case however they would have had to have been made before cessation of hostilities. I don't know but they certainly are curious.

                  Yours, Guy.

                    Luger

Any veteran who told a story about throwing a Luger away for fear of burglary is either a complete jackass or a liar. A REAL veteran would have bought ammunition for it and shot the scumbag when he broke in. Either that, or he would have sold it. Good grief

what a ridiculous thing to say, you obviously have no Idea about British gun law. Not only that but you are calling Into question the Integrity of someone I happen to respect. i've seen your posts here before and I fear It Is you who are the jackass my friend and that Is putting it politely. The man Is In his 80's and was extremely worried about having a gun In the house. I am sorry to have wasted your time, I shall know better In future than to post here.

                        Beau:

Best to take what the English veteran stated about these SS items with a HUGE Grain of salt. What you are looking at here are souvenir coasters from post-war SS veteran reunions - nothing more, nothing less.

Please click on the link below for information on another such SS reunion souvenir, this time a place-mat from a post-war LSSAH reunion....

For sale by WWII Inc in 1970s - p. 214-16: "Rare Division & Unit Patches. All mint condition on felt backs w/RZM tags - 3-1/2 inch dia. Your choice $5.00 each."

The SS-Div HJ patch has the same spacing of the words. The rest look identical to the quality and design from WWII Inc.

My fave is the one for Colditz Castle sold by WWII Inc as part of the series - prepared in secret by the POWs, no doubt.

                          Cheers,

                          Stephen

These are post War, with my own eyes I saw these or very similar coasters being sold at Veterans gatherings in the 1980s.

What makes me wonder is why they arent colorfast. Most post ww2 items are colorfast, and wont bleed when wet , but i have no idea if these are originals...Im sure they sold all kinds of novelties in germany during the war, but are they big enough to hold a 1/L beer stein?. Do go back and do the magnet trick, but use ceramic magnets with strong magnets, and it wont be in very good shape, but if you go quickly, you mays save much of the finish. Offer the guy 50.. to allow you to retrieve it.iTS worth A SHOT.(dont forget your playtex rubber gloves)
