    SS tab and eagle

Hello. First ....sorry for the blurry pics. I could not find my good camera to take pics today. But, I just got these out of the woodwork and had a question or two. The tab has a pip located on it. Is that some sort of nco doing? Is this eagle the rarer variation not made at Dacau? They are both really salty and dirty. These must have been worn. The eagle has a small part of the uniform sewn to it!

P.S I will take better pictures soon!

pip was probably added by the vet after it's capture.

All nice, probably taken off the same tunic. Nice RZM pip removed from the rank tab and placed on the runic tab. Eagle is a nice, more desirable type, but not a rare variation.

Were Bevo types as issued tabs? What makes them a harder find than the others?

Both the machine woven (BeVo) and the machine embroidered (RZM) styles were issued and worn.

Bevo types were the most common. Your set is very nice [IMO] because it looks like a field stripped set from the same soldier. The small piece of uniform on the back of the eagle, the rough shape of the tab with added pip. I hope you keep them together. I'd rather have this set than a stone mint variety.

                            re: tab, eagle & pip

I agree that the items probably came from a single killed
SS Unterscharfuhrer. It was common for GIs to take rank
apurtenances, like pips or gulls, and stick them onto another
piece of insignia. I have German wallets with pips stuck into them
and a Luft shoulder board with rank gulls from the same victim's
collar tab) applied to the board.
I believe SS rank tabs were retained far less-often than runic tabs, because
many W-SS rank upgrades were done in the field, by simply sticking a pip
through both the tab and the collar itself. This made removing the tab
alone almost impossible and relatively few soldiers cut the entire collar corner off. When that did happen, it was usually the runic side which
got cut-off, because it was more-interesting than the rank side.
The bevo runic tabs were around the later half of the war and are certainly NOT rare. The two most common variants have the white mesh backing as shown, or a plain cardboard backing.
