    Dachau SS militaria Question

I've noticed a few dealers carrying items that have been described as Dachau SS pickups from vets, etc. The materials are all mostly mint, unissued condition stuff. These are reptuable dealers too. What I'm curious about is what is this all about and why this influx of stuff now.

Dachau was a storage unit for SS insignia, esp. foreign volunteer items. When the camp was liberated fistfuls of patches were taken by GIs as souveneirs. Now that the vets are starting to disappear, this stuff is starting to appear in quantity

I have a Handschar Dachau piece myself. these are noticable because of the white/gray thread on the rear border

      Dallas.

      That's a very good question.

Once upon a time, I asked it myself and .................

This is the sort of quest for knowledge that ruffles feathers aplenty.

        Dallas,

there was a heated debate about Dachau insignia back in this thread: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...ad.php?t=42629

It is undisputed that US vets brought back a lot of cloth items from the storage facility at the Dachau camp, however I am constantly surprised at the amount of "Dachau" items offered by various dealers.

Why don't you just post a link to the thread and get it over with so we don't end up with a thread here filled with innuendos and assumptions and assertions.
          Best regards,

The last two lines you wrote here totally sum up exactly what I was trying to say in the other thread.

            Tony.

Yep, I see that. We must've been typing at the same time.

Just MO, But I would save up for a nice early to mid-war piece of insignia, and for the "moment" pass on items like that.

If a collector has no idea of what he's looking at I would say that's the best advice to follow..

                    Opinions on this....

Sorry if I opened a can of worms. Hopefully not.

What do you think about these.

He doesn't say Dachau. Just a veteran hord. Bruce as a lifetime authenticity guarantee too.

Dachau insignia are absolutely real in my opinion, and the story is true...I have even gotten some from the vets myself...that is where all the fezes came from...but they also copied the insignia...namely what comes to mind are the foreign volunteer tabs. I have owned thread tied bundles of the stuff that came from vets...for examples the rzm eagles in bundles of ten.

I have sent some pics to Tony Barto to post here of a portion of a hoard of Dachau insignia found by Bob Hritz. Some of you have already seen these pics on the other form..possibly here..not sure where I posted them. In these pics you will see bundles of eagles, foreign Vol. shields, police shields, collar tabs, etc. One of the reasons it seems there are so many of these on dealers sites is because when these items were sold off to collectors and dealers they got spread out..it may seem like a lot but in essence..not really..once you see how many came from these dachau hits. And there were more of these big Dachau hits in the past years. That is one reason you don't see much fluctuation in price with these items..they are just not that rare...and relatively cheap when one considers other SS cloth. Perfect pieces for the new SS collector to acquire and not get hurt in the pocket.
