    SS Cigarette Case (comments please)

I have an opportunity to purchase this supposed SS Cigarette Case from a private seller. I don't see any markings on it and I've never encountered a case like this before. I'm looking for help to find out if it is original or post war repro. If this case is authentic WWII, what would a fair value be on this? Thanks.

The piece comes with a nice patina.

You will never know if such an item is authentic or not - and I would be thrilled but also surprised if anybody could ever step in and show one of these with provenance.

For me, a 'made up' item.

Thanks for your input Thorston and Tony. I figured it would be hard to authenticate. If I saw this piece being taken out of a Vet's trunk from his attic I would feel it would be genuine, but the private seller who is offering this receives all his items from "pickers', so there is no way to know where, when or whom this came from. Thanks again.

I had one like this some years back, almost identical. I am sure it was a post war creation.

These are always tough, you'll never be able to prove if its original, but if you have seen more than one you can bet it is a post war piece. They should be accordingly inexpensive. I got one with some original insignia which came as a group but who knows?? Unfortunately I won't.

Thanks for your comments and sharing your experience Tietze. Looks like I'll be passing on buying this piece.

I understand and agree with the consensis that this item is likely post war, but wanted to put out a theory for discussion.

During WWII was it possible that maybe jewelors or tabacco shops might have had items like this for sale? Could the jewelor have produced several identical items like this, say for instance maybe he made 100 Luftwaffe cigarette cases, 100 Heer cigarette cases, and 50 SS cigarette cases and then put them in his store for sale to the soldiers? Like I say, this is just for discussion, as I don't know what the practices were for jewelors or manufacturers in Germany during WWII. Any thoughts on this theory that could explain multiple examples of the same piece?

I remember, I had two similar SS stickpins (in silver and gold), which were post war fakes. I think, it can be an old case with added SS runes.
Added, to make it more interesting.....$$$$$$
