Nope it's a fake that's trying to be that type.

        Thanks Ian,
I got lazy and after researching SS para smock eagles here on the WAF, I see what you mean.

I'm not so sure it's bad, I like the sizing on the back on the thread used. The construction is different but looks good... don't toss it just yet.

              Peter,
I did initially appreciate the design/proportions. I thought it looked familiar and may have had a chance.
After Ian's post I researched here and found this example. It seems to have a wider stance and wreath circle.

              Is this a rare variant?

Jack, the eagle in post #14 of your link is an all together different bird.

I did not recognize it as a textbook embroidered eagle, but it did remind me of those that have been described as a type used on para smocks.
And I admit I haven't seen that kind of treatment on the back.

Indeed not the same eagle ( smooth double ring , legspace , long toes ) - but it has been shown before >> http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=318253

This eagle has a chance I think. It has the same "film" residue on the backing material as often seen on SS raute insignia.
                      I like it! Neat variation!

I would not call it a variant. Just a more rare pattern. I got one from a vet over 25 years ago. Have 2 in my collection.
