Question On Repaired Medals

Quick question regarding repaired medals, mostly atachement prongs. How do you determine whether or not to repair something? Is there a rule of thumb as to the value of a medal that has been repaired? Or does it just come down to a collectors preference, as some like "well used" and some "neer mint".

Not sure why anyone would want to repair a medal. What for? You going to wear it?
IMO the value would drop if someone has messed around and tried to repair an item.
