It´s a bad one indeed. Details are way to soft and the suspension ring is not correct tear drop formed. The color is way to bright also for a original IMO.
Agreed...the old 'Crown of Thorns' fake.
These can often be found on dealers' sites being sold as original due to a very slight resemblance to the 3rd. Class SS-Award pictured in the Petz & Lorenz catalogue. On closer examination, however, it differs in a few ways ie. the Runes, the rim and most noticeably the wreath binder. At first glance, the P & L example also appears to have the same 'thorny', acanthus leaf type protrusions behind each oakleaf, but on closer examination it can be seen that this exaggeration is an illusion caused by shadow. As is so often the case, in the mistaken belief that SS-Service Awards were never manufactured with circular suspension loops, this particular fake has had its loop re-shaped, in a crude attempt to make it more acceptable.
