    SS pioneer tab….

    <O></O>

I carefully removed one pin from the collar to see if the metal shovel was marked. Guess what… It is!!

          Marc.

Nice patch of a staff member of an Allgemeine-SS Pionier Sturmbann. The mark is pre-'36 Assmann's and goes to show how meticulously some of these things were marked - like the tiny marks on the back of the grip eagles for SA/SS/NSKK daggers. Officer patches would normally have had a bullion pick and shovel, but I see nothing to cast a shadow on this one.

          Regards,

          Robin.

Sorry Marc i missed this one, i am not happy with the metal insignia been classed as ss, i would like to see a picture of ss p.i. wearing such metal insignia as i have never seen any, also with this patch there is a problem for me in the fact that the patch is a rank patch,
            cheers,
            Gary

              Good morning Garry, all,

              <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" /><o></o>

Thank you for the contradicting input, I like this, as it is constructive and make people think a little! I think all will agree on the fact that this patch is real. (The patch and the metal insignia). That it might not be an “official” SS patch, I don’t know, I don’t have enough experience with this stuff. I just know that it does not come from a dealer nor collector but from private source. From what I have learned over the past few months I know that some strange mixtures of insignias have existed in the SS. I guess no one will ever be capable of telling with 100 % certitude that used this patch.

For the record, I obtained this patch from a former Belgian prisoner / worker in Germany together with a handful of silverware from the Wewelsburg. He was hanging around the castle for a wile before he was sent back to Belgium when the war ended.

I missed Gary's input while typing, but couldn't this be a SA tab maybe?

                    Marc,
although I know nearly anything is possible as photographic evidence has shown not everything SS was regulation, But how would the wearer display his rank? Also the emblem is upside down, worn on an open collar.

                    cheers,
                    Gary

                      Gary.
Of course, you're right about this being a rank patch. That puts a different complexion on it.
Silly me. Couldn't see the wood for the trees! (No pun intended!)
                      Regards,

maybe someone just pinned the shovel/pick device to a rank tab missing the pip. souveneir maybe?

                          Hi again,

I’m not the one to argue about the identification of this item with you guys! What do I know! At closer look Gary is indeed correct of course. This is a “rank “ side patch but there have been no other insignias on this patch. There are absolutely no other holes and the shovel and axe are deeply incrusted in the item. The metal insignia is the only insignia that has been on this tab. Whatever it is, and who ever made it like this, it was done loooooong time ago.

This is what it could have looked like????…………
