Using new cotton thread soaked and dried in either coffee or tea (for the aged effect) you use a thin needle and follow old holes and pull thought. Time consuming but pretty easy. Come on Peter you have a few buddies that used to rebuild caps.
    Nick,
I missed the part about removing the lining. I guess if you did that, it would be possible. As far as your other comments, they are what make you..you.

Thank you, I take that as a compliment.

It does look like one of those early recycled 'Chi-ga-go Gang' visors.

This one is more common sense than anything. The Erel sweatband has the patent markings. Erel received the patent in Aug of 1940. Prior to that they marked the sweatbands DRGM. So at the very earliest the cap could be is about 1941 or very, very late 1940. By 1940, all of the Allgemeine-SS had been issued grey wartime uniforms and by 1941 the black SS uniform had been taken out of circulation by most of the SS. So who would even be ordering a black Alg generals cap in late 1940, 1941? Then you have the Reichsfuhrer tag. You don’t find these in Alg caps past the mid 1930’s. No need to look any further, common sense dictates its bad. Oh and yes the cap in reminiscent of caps that filtered though Chicago. I wonder who the seller on Manions is. I might have to place a call to a buddy there.

Hiya Nick, if he's the one responsible for vetting the SS content I suggest you leave it ringing for a while cos he seems to have slipped into a coma.

Looks more like one of those "out west" gang visors to me. Come to think of it, based on NTZ's demonstrated "restoration" talents...

BTW Nick, my hats off to you on that repair job. Very impressive!

Tom you are correct. This could be a west job. You need to see how it’s built to make that call. I don’t want to give Chi town too much credit. The caps were not rebuilt there. They were done somewhere in the middle. They were just filtered though Chi town. An under the hood could tell me point of origin. The only thing is the west concentrated on Luft and Heer generals. The mid US guys liked SS. Anyway, thanks for the compliment. Yes if I wanted to fake a cap I could blow a lot of these guys out of the water. I just choose a different path.

I doubt this statement very much

From dated and known photos, black was worn even in the war times.
See the honored Munich SS members example ranks of Eberstein and so on.
See photos from the Horse riding competitions in the war times. See photos from visitors and guests at Wewelsburg or at the Berghof. This just as popular examples.

Robert I have no doubt that small numbers of the Alg SS retained their black uniforms and wore them on ceremonial occasions after 1940. But to say one would still be purchasing the black uniform after 1940 is a whole other story. In regards to the cap in question, when is the last time you seen a tag like that in a later Alg cap? You and I am sure can both agree even if one were to be made in 1940/41 it would not have the tag.

My statement has nothing to do with the cap above.
See also the SS Kleiderkasse catalog from all the different years, it is just not right there was nothing in this class purchased in the war time.
