I believe it is a fake and not a good one.

      Hello,

I've to disagree with Chris : the buckle is an original one late war made by Overhoff.

Well, I may be wrong, but how does an original buckle end up with an uneven and irregular swastika like this? That is very odd.

Also, can you explain how the heavily worn chest feathers still have nice paint on top of all that wear?

I agree with Ric. I believe what you see, Chris, is bare steel shining through the rust on this near-relic buckle.

              Chris,

by the pics the buckle looks a ground dug item, so an in hand checking could better answer to your questions : a restored piece......heavily cleaned off........partially repainted........or just with an odd patina but still original by any part ?
That said the buckle shows all the features of an original one by Overhoff, probably late war made but with catch still soldered on (mid war) and not spot welded as for the last series.

                Gents!

If You need more detailed pics for the final decision, please let me know!

Not a top piece, but I'd like to know, if it is OK...by the way, if not, we can learn a lot...how the fakers do they job.

..This Buckle looks NOT like a Ground Find, it looks more like a Water Find

...if it is a Fake, it could possibly been made by treating with Flame and buried in Slurry...,

                    Peter,

if you and anybody else need further info about late war production by Overhoff, the "Belts and Buckles Forum" offer a lot of nice pics :

                    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...sprune=-1&f=28

...and if you have not time enough to make a searching see this nice study in depth :

                    http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...d.php?t=331817

marking apart you see buckles by the same maker there and the obvious repro compared with.
