A 1940 dated fez for a unit the was officially formed on March 1st 1943 and wasn't authorised by Hitler till 10th February 1943.

The insignia may be good but appear re-applied.

So in my honest opinion you've got either a bad stamp in a re-badged fez OR a total duff.

I think I read here that the early Fezes were taken from French stock so possible. It appears to have the wide sweatband which are not usually associated with the Dachau manufactured

See this thread ref French manufactured Fez: http://dev.wehrmacht-awards.com/foru...&highlight=fez

The 1940 date on the sweatband is ok, see this thread:

In which case the logic is reversed and it appears to be almost certainly correct

The 40 date would definately have had me running

Very Understandable . I always knew there were two types.. Not until recently did I know of the French Connection in their manufacture. If you think about it, early elements of the Division were trained and then some even mutinied in France

                Bad insignia.

Take a look at the eagle's feet...

Now with the close ups . The sewing doesn't look typical of fezzes. Probably a stripped fez and then reapplied insignia .I guess skull a bad one too Brad ?

Ian you weren't off the mark. I still think it was a good fez at one time!!

Yes, both the skull and eagle are reproductions.
