I met an older collector today who had an SS officers cap in pristine condition with the inside having the officers name Dr. Zimmerman with the rank of major. I was wondering if there was anyway to possibly pin down who the hats owner was? Any help is greatly appreciated!

Pete, two things is the cap original is for my view the base to go ahead.
Step two is to look into the SS-Dienstalterlisten. A photo would help.

Hey thanks for the reply! Next time over there I will take pics. He got the hat from the dump in the 80s it fell off the uniform as the uniform was burned but at least the hat survived!

In the Fuhrerliste der Waffen-SS there is only one Dr. Zimmermann, first name Arthur, but his rank was not major (SS-Sturmbannführer) but SS-Hauptsturmführer (captain).
