They are original tabs but they were never issued and there is no real consensus over who they were to be issued to. The SS pocket diary for 1945 lists them for French volunteers whilst other sources suggest they were to be issued to Danes in the Nordland division. As far as anyone can ascertain, French volunteers all wore the SS runes and the 'national' collar tab which was planned for them, a sword and laurel wreath, was never put into production.

The Jean d'Arc collar tab was intended to be the collar patch for the Charlemagne Division. However the veterans of the 1943 SS Sturmbrigade Frankreich rejected it as it was too "Catholic" or religious and wanted the SS runes to remain since for them, the SS runes signifies a common "European" bond (in the perspective of the Sturmbrigade French veterans)

The Celtic Cross was the 2nd design (I was informed that it was a "t" in a circle rather than an "x") to placate the Charlemagne troopers from the LVF faction, rather than the Sturmbrigade ones and one possible reason is that it was also considered as a pagan symbol as well as a religious symbol

I was in contact with Jean Mabire back in late 2005 and I was about to send him a letter enquiring the Celtic Cross collar patch design that was alleged to have been worn locally by the Flak Battalion of the Charlemagne Division when I found out that he has passed away in 2006 (Mabire knew personally a veteran of the Flak Battalion which is the reason why I planned to send him a letter about the Celtic Cross collar patch)

The story is a bit different: the future division was initially supposed to be named "Jeanne d'Arc" but the SS high instance went for Charlemagne that could be a german/french symbol.
