likely an 1800's framed Schloss Wewelsburg SS print

Got this old framed print of wewelsburg which is residing comfortably in my study. Pre-TR but the foreshadowing of its future residents evokes many thoughts of history and world events that once hinged on this castle atop the bluff. Thought the forum would share my appreciation of this art. So who approves?

Beautiful print! Thanks for posting. I was there last year, stayed in the castle. It was quite cool as my girlfreind and I were the only people staying there, had the whole castle to ourselves!

            Thanks Etienne and Daniel...

OK Daniel, you cannot tell a story like that and just quit! I'd like to hear more of what you experienced there. Sounds like an awesome experience being all alone there with the better half. Was it eerie at all? Did you wander around at night? What an opportunity! I hope you made good use of it....

Alright then, some more details! My now ex girlfreind and I spent two nights at Wewelsburg in May last year as part of a trip through Europe. I had always wanted to stay at the Castle since I found out it was a Youth Hostel. Contary to what you might think, it wasn't too hard to convince the girlfreind to stay there. You just say, 'hey I found this really romantic castle in a quaint German Village to stay in, you keen?' Sounds better than saying 'Wanna stay in a probably haunted Nazi Castle that was owned by the SS?'

Anyway, if your planning on going there I'd reccomend May, as its getting close to the Castles' 'off season' and there's less of a chance of the place being overrun with screaming German Schoolkids who really ruin the atmosphere.

The first night we stayed there was the best, we were the only guests and once the staff went home for the night we had the place to ourselves which was awesome. It was soooo quiet and still, we did do a bit of a night time walk around the castle, which I have to admit was kind of creepy and yes, we did hear some creaking and banging noises which made my girlfreind grip my hand a bit tighter! But, c'mon it was only the old timber floors right??

We went to bed about 11pm and I was woken at about 02.30 by a really intense Thunderstorm! The room was lit up by the lightining and I went to the window to look outside. it was one of those moments I'll always remember, looking out over the triangular courtyard as it was lit up by the lightning and listening to the thunder ehcoing and rattling the windows as the rain came down in torrents on the roof. That is another reason why I'd reccomemd going in May, you get Thuderstorms!

The next day we had breakfast in basement dining hall, which has a cool vaulted ceiling and despite the fact we were the only guests there was still a table reserved for "Herr Hockey"

After breakfast we met with WAF member Thorsten B who had come from Munster to give us a guided tour of the Village and Castle. Thorsten showed us all around the Village and pointed out all the Pagan and Runic motifs still on some of the houses and gave us an excellent overview of the SS Culture and the SS history of the Castle. We had Lunch at the wonderful Ottens Hof Resturant where you can sit on benches with Totenkopfs or Sunwheels carved on the ends. The Resturant was originally a medievil Barn before being turned into a Community meeting place by the SS for the Hitler Youth etc and hence has many SS related decorations both inside and outside, however you must look for them as most are covered these days.

After lunch we went out to the site of the former Concentration Camp and then for a short walk into the forest to the site of the SS shooting range which I didn't know about and would take a bit of finding if you didn't know what to look for!

That evening my girlfreind and I want back to the Ottens Hof for dinner, (its the only place to eat the village, the Pizza place was closed) That night there was another Thunderstorm, but this time I just lay in bed and thought about all the history of this special and enjoyed the atmosphere! We couldn't do any more exploring that night because a school group turned up!

I think Wewelsburg may have changed a bit since I've been there and some of the atmosphere may have gone, so I feel fortunate to have stayed there when I did.

Daniel, this is an awesome story! I enjoyed reading of your stay. I am most impressed that you were there all alone and looked out over the courtyard in the rain, thunder, and lightning! And to think Herr Himmler may have witnessed the same scene while his thoughts ran wild with insane dreams of conquest and empire! What an experience you had. This image will stick with me. In my opinion, to connect with a historical place is to come to a better understanding of the events and the times like no other way. And to be there alone at night exploring the place! Wow is all I can say. Very cool. Thanks for sharing. One more question, were you able to go down into the crypt alone or be in the sunwheel swas room at night? So cool.

At least they let you in.
As it was 12.00 when i arrived, i rang the bel of the caretaker wich was a 18 year old girl who only shouted at me.
But i'm as stubburn as they get, did not leave and slept in the courtyard.
However, sleeping on that cold hard bench, i did not find the experience as "enchanting" as you did...

What a fine Thread, thank you Capt R and Daniel
Here´s my little Wewelsburg Story: As I was around 20 Years old I visited the Wewelsburg with my best Friend, so it´s was a warm and sunny Spring day with some others, but not too much, Visitors around us. We went downstairs to the Crypt. We stood alone behind Steel Grid Bars which block out the Entrance to the Crypt. I was very tall at that time, so I tried to move through the grid and it was going! Unbelivable, I stood in the Center of the Crypt as suddenly a complete School Class came upstairs to the Crypt.. So now I have to hide
I kept hiding directly straight right beside the Entrance while kidding Teens looked Inside.. They didn´t see me I couldn´t refrain from laughing waiting that the Kids leaving that Place. After a few minutes the Schoolkids had enough and went upstairs. So I stayed a few seconds, trying to catch a trace of Atmosphere there.. I think ordinary Visitors would never been there.. But hurry up going outside again, before next Vistors coming upstairs.. I have had a little Panic to get Stucked between the tight Bars while getting outside ..but I got back to the Sunlight This is my special Wewelsburg Experience

                        Kind Regards

                        Andy

I approve. Wonderful lithograph, beautifully framed, featuring a site of unequivocal historic significance. In my opinion the 19th century pressing date makes the piece as desirable as anything from the TR era.

                            Stellar presentation Captain!
