    Early SS Totenkopf and Eagle

    Hi,

I was hoping that someone could tell me when this skull/eagle combination was seen on SS hats?

    http://www.germaniainternational.com...ercapset01.jpg

I know that the later style had a full jaw, and the eagle had a much broader wingspan. When did this change take place?

    regards,

    Darren

This combination was used until 1934, when the new skull came in. The new eagle appeared in 1936. However, some of the 'old guard' kept their old badges for years and still wore them.

As a point of interest, the eagle shown in this photo is NOT the type which should have been worn on an early SS cap. The one shown is a mid-period NSDAP political leader's eagle, which should not have been used by the SS or the SA. The skull shown is also a variant of the Prussian type which is not usually seen on SS caps.

      Hi Rick,

I appreciate your help. Do you have any photos that you could post of early SS cap insignia? I am curious to what one should look for when comparing early SS and Prussian Totenkopfs. How did the early SS eagle look?

      regards,

      Darren

        Darren.

If you do a search under 'skull', 'totenkopf', etc. you'll get all the pix and info you need.

        Best regards,

        Rick. (Oops!)
