        heuristic model

        So were the images put together in a collage photo montage(as was done in both Third Reich and Communist 1930's Totalitarian regiemes photos , or modern inspired interpretations?

            It is difficult to tell if the entire photo has been altered to add figures or to enhance the photo. Often outdoor photos are enhanced to accentuate figures against a dull background, eliminate undesirable figures and embellish architectural features. Such action can be seen in some of Hoffmann photos or period newsphotos. Besides the lines drawn on the coats to contrast and give them shape, the main entrance and building above the entrance has also been "worked on" in this photo.

            It is a fascinating glimpse into Allach business.

              Not necessarily............

              It was standard procedure, when preparing photos for "press"( for printing) to "enhance" the image. It was normal to outline significant aspects of a photo that had "soft edges", were a little out of focus, not "prominant" enough, etc., to "bring forward" figures/items/aspects of original photo. Hopefully the studio would have a talented person doing this brushork, but often they had hacks that would more or less butcher the photo(which I think is the case here).
              You can see in another photo (post #5) the "artist" really butchers the vase on the left with his '"enhancement".

              It was not very common for "photo-retouchers" to add alot of things that were not there previously, they mostly removed stuff. One techniqiue used alot was airbrushing a light "fog" of white or grey paint to the backgroud which would bring forward intended subject matter.

              A common "faked photo" of the day was putting two people together in a photo simply by cutting the out and pasting them together and fixing things up with a brush and/or an airbrush. But usually when this was done, the people had actually together at the time photos were taken, but there wasn't the "right" shot of subects together.

              Of course nowadays it's much earier to fake people out with outrageous and sometimes impossible photos that look completely believable.

              The reason I know about this is because I own a few original Press photos that have been enhanced, with the original paint, airbrush, "collage" work present.

              p.s. sorry for all the "quotation" marks

              p.s.;
              My long winded post here took so long to write, that I didn't realize that JoeW said pretty much the same thing but with far fewer words.!

                Believe it or not: the persons in the first pic are indeed there and they are real.
