    Just a thought.

Hi John - I have to excuse me. I have been to a military fair and showed the runes to some collectors, they also told me that is silver oxidation. Another fact would be - why shoould they also paint the backside, which is under the black cover.

Silver only turns dark, alluminium corrodes to white pulver, as seen on your runes. This can also happen under the paper, as long as there is 02 and H20.

So the runes are made of silvered / alu? or only alu?

            It's oxidisation, aluminium oxide.

Probably alum. thread or alum.braided w/other fibers, but many other metals also oxidize to white, (but not silver).
Off hand, lead and titanium will also ox. to white, there are many more though.
Examine a "fresh" example to determine construction. But as Dmv pointed out, the is no "silver" there.
There is just some kind of silver colored metal that has oxidized.

I agree with Ian! And again would have one of these on display with no problem of authenticity!
