Into the quarry. The steps are very steep, and there is not much to hold onto if you slip and fall . . . purposely designed this way.

If you ever have the opportunity to stay in Mauthausen, I would suggest a visit to Herr Ortner and Family at the Gasthof Zur Traube. They are great people, and there home is a great place to spend the night . . . (sorry about the pitiful "plug", but it really is a great place - well worth a stay!)

Yes, we had three wonderful days in Mauthausen . . . it is a gorgeous town, with so much to see and do. We bicycled from Linz to Grein, and then ran out of time for having to move on to Munich. Sorry we did not have much of an opportunity to meet up this time . . . but we will be back soon - I have some further study I would like to complete there some day. It will be a good time to share a Gösser then, I think!

And Gusen was quite a nice place as well . . . you will recognize the "Jourhaus", I'm sure.

And we did get to see a small portion of the Bergkristall system as well . . . there is a great push to open the tunnel system, but after peeking inside, it will take a lot of work to make it safe . . . let's hope some day that happens - it would be interesting to actually see where the ME-262 was assembled, I think!

No. But we did find many markers, all over the side of the roads - left to time, seemingly forgotten . . .

Thanks for the photo's. We went to Dachau last year (the photos are on here somewhere) these sites are fascinating to visit and although it was a beautiful sunny day at Dachau there is a real sense of the weight of the past there and a calm over the place.

My wife can't bear the thoughts of what happened there so I took our eldest daughter, Tina, who was 14 then, we plan to go to Auschwitz one day and possibly Sachsenhausen or Buchenwald.

It seems the tunnels are now open to the public!

After reading this, I came across a few new photos that have been recently posted on the web . . . very exciting, and will certainly be worth a return visit some day.
