IMO, for this person to have been in WW1, he would have to be around 40-years old, give or take, in 1940, which would account for the types of medals on the bar.

The WW1 Iron Cross 1st class was on the tunic; it fits the loops properly and has left a vertical shadow where the attaching pin has laid against the tunic fabric for a long period of time.

The cross is very unusual as it is stamped from one piece of non ferrous metal; the worn areas have an aged “brassy” appearance. The metal used in the construction is hard, strong and sturdy; the details are high quality, as are the pin, hinge and catch.

Is this possibly an expedient issue or a privately made item…? I was told that it was always on the tunic.

Hoping for additional surprises regarding this tunic.

                      Bill,

Those are wonderful additions that seldom remain with a tunic. Does the ribbon bar fit in the loops provided? Some great pieces even if they didn't go with the tunic, but it sounds like yo may have received some history with it too. Once again...congratulations!

Here is pilli with Herman Meyer back in the day before he was Herman Meyer, his bar stated with an EK II and after that it looks like an Imperial State award.

                            Richard,

I was told that the medals shown were always with the tunic, inside a garment bag, hanging in the closet. The medal bar is too long to fit the loops on the tunic but a six ribbon bar seems like it might fit perfectly; maybe a ribbon bar will show up as they continue to clean up the estate.
