are all cocentration camp armbands fake?

this is out of my field but I do know from reading that most camp armbands encountered are going to be fake. (of course, so is every other item in this hobby so it seems... LOL)

What are some of the features of this one that would support that?

the faded stamps on the back say RATTEN - PETS (what the heck is this about?)

No, all KZ armbands are not fake. IMO, the armband you are showing is real, but it probably has nothing to do with the KZ system or the Third Reich.

      Armband

The majority of KZ armbands offered are reproductions and outright fantasy garbage. The armband presented purports to be from the Corpse (Leichen) Detail (Kommando). The title font, blue lettering of other text and skull symbol of this armband are consistant with the type of fake armband encountered when dealing with KZ or Ghetto attributed cloth items. The word "kommando" also begins with lower case "k". Another red flag.

The words ratten "pests" Why would you have the English word for pests on a German armband? It's plagen) and is another flag. Also the painted image of a rat, along with other text on the underside of the armband? I don't think so. This armband stinks.

An excellent reference for these items is the book: Counterfeiting the Holocaust", subitiled "A Historical and Archival Examination of Holocaust Artifacts", by Alecs Tulkoff. Thanks to Bill Dienna for posting this title in another thread:

please explain further.... if it's real, then what was it used for?

I agree with Charles entirely. This armband shows the typical fake aging and cheesy rubber stamps I would expect from an Eastern European fantasy fake of the sort widely available all over the world.

It is my opinion that these were worn by volunteers searching for the dead bodies in bombed cities. Not fake, not KZ related, possibly post war. They were probably required for wear to differentiate from looters.

wow, you're good. I just found out that the guy trying to sell it is an eastern european dealer that has a lot of questionable stuff.

I am glad I didn't buy this thing, I just borrowed the photos to ask about it as I was curious...

              thanks for the info.....

I knew that rubber stamps on armband is usually bad, but I didn't notice they were on the inside as opposed to the outside like the usual fakes.

I think there is difference between a fake and something that is not fake, but being represented as something it is not. IMO, this armband is the later.
