It's original, the 'droopy eye' fake looks as though the eye socket has melted.

I don't know how most tropical cap insignia were sewn, but I would imagine you would find both machine, and hand-stitched examples, though I would think most would have been machine stitched on. Someone correct me if I'm wrong. As to determining whether something was PERIOD attached is sometimes very difficult.
