I was thinking of the lettering on hunting association badges, but I got that wrong...it didnt make sense you are right..i was thinking of some other letters . Please excuse the mistake, as By the time i re -thought the comment and went back to correct it I ran out of time ....as you know ...you cant now correct mistakes unless you are within the time.

I do believe this item to be special, and to me looks to be authentic. Maybe the initials of the artist may someday be traced to someone known as stated who worked there. It kinda reminds me of a beer tray painting.

I cannot give the proof that this piece is authentic nor that it is not.
I just said what I know about the circumstances at KL Buchenwald and from that view it is at least possible that it was indeed made there.

The argument that the eagle (or the whole coin you present) looks very similar sounds good but is definitely not the key that the piece probably is a fake or not.

          Why?

Because then we can turn your argument the other way round and say that the similarities are indeed a hint that the piece is original by assuming that the responsible artist can be the same one in both cases - creating an official coin and a traditional plaque for SS-members serving at KL Buchenwald!

And in this case it could be only one artist - Diebitsch - which I cannot believe because this plaque does not bear the intertwined runes so it cannot be directly created by him.

Could be that the responsible SS-members in Buchenwald used guidelines of his SS-design and developed similar items - not impossible in my opinion.

Other possibility based on the historical facts: KL Buchenwald was special among the KL´s in so far that the SS gathered there many prisoners with excellent skills on their field of work within their firms just being founded and in development for different purposes.

These specialists among the prisoners even enabled the SS to fake other country´s currency!

So at least this well-known fact makes it plausible that the needful efficient knowledge and man-power was there in that time.

Apart from that one can easily see that this ceramic plaque is of high quality - normally fakes in ceramic material can be easily identified as such, one has just to look around and examine an original and a non-original Julleuchter!

Finally in my opinion it is not a piece of such a high value that fakers would spend such a lot of effort in it - if there is such a skillful faker around then why wouldn´t he focus his time and costs on the regular and known Allach plaques?

Another hint can only be given by Mr. Butschek himself: the answer to the question out of which source this piece has shown up and offered or shown to him.

Thanks to Thorsten B. for these interesting facts.

I started this thread as I was curious if someone knows more about the history of this plaque. I´m pretty sure the plaque is real.

It was purchased by a friend of mine a few days ago for 30 Euros from the family along with a few other medals. He gave me the chance to buy it on the same day.

Unfortunately no photos or documents related to the KZ or the SS. The family kept it in this round leather bag.

I made a mistake in my post above:

the pieces Diebitsch designed/created does not necessarily bear the intertwined runes - that is important to know.

Nonetheless I would expect it in this case because it is for the inner use of the SS.

Serious people need to receive serious help - that is the key for keeping this forum alive - and interesting.

Mr. Butschek, to get this right: was one member in the family you mentioned above an SS-member?

                Or is it still unclear?

Often enough I had to face the problem that still today the living parts of the family don´t say one word if a member of the family was once in the SS or not.

That´s a problem especially when it comes to fine and original but yet unknown pieces.

No, they didnt say a word and my friend said he guesses that they didnt realise this plaque was somehow connected to the KZ.

At least he didn´t bother to ask.

You already managed to get the most interesting piece anyway - Congrads!

I am sure there is more - keep us informed if possible.

KL stuff is so freaking rare!
