Hi John, are you certain on the ID of this badge? The SS wore a raute (diamond shaped badge in black cloth) with the lyre embroidered on it on the lower left sleeve.

I have checked on it, and it is not an item worn by the SS music school either?

      Cheers, Ade.

        Hi again Ade,
Thanks again for your reply. Pretty certain on it being SS. I don't think it's all that common. I think it's a variant of what you speak of but I could be wrong.

Anyone ever seen one of these?
          Thanks,

I've got its twin--I believe in the Hayes book it's noted as being connected to the SS, but there is no documentation provided. I picked mine up in a veteran's grouping with some SA insignia and badges. I wish it was an SS piece, but I've never been able to find anything positively identifying it as being connected to an specific organization.

Hi John and Erich, I have been looking at the badge again and with Erich's comments it got me thinking.

I wonder if the badge was worn by the "Brigade Ehrhardt"? They were a Friekorps unit that was later incorporated into the SS. I have checked with what little reference material I have on this unit, but I cannot find the badge. But their sleeve badge did have a rope border design; I know this is stretching it a bit

I think the "Veterans / incorporated into the SS" angle is one worth checking into?

                Cheers, Ade

                  badge

                  Hello Adrian and John,
I'll try to take a photo of it this afternoon if I have the opportunity, but it's unmarked and is exactly the same as yours.
My thought was that it was one of those 'off the shelf' type insignia that could be purchased from an insignia shop and used by any group that liked that particular style--there were so many types of local amateur bands in Germany at the time--factory bands, small business bands, Shooting club bands, bowling league bands, etc. It could have been used by the Brigade Ehrhardt but I've not seen a photo or drawing of one in a period reference book so have not been able to 'pin' it down.

                        Hi Erich,
Thanks for the pic! Yes, it's a twin to mine. Yours, however looks to be silver in color rather than gold. Is this accurate or perhaps just your camera or lighting?
                        Thanks again...............John

                          Hi Ade,
"Brigade Ehrhardt" has returned some really interesting reults on the web.
                          Thanks for the lead............Regards, John

                            Hello John,
Yes, the obverse border and lyra are silver colored. The wool is black. The reverse shows the natural brass color.

                              Hi Erich and Ade,
The obverse on mine is gold in color and the wool is a very dark blue.
I've been scouring the web for pictures but no luck as of yet.
