Thin or thick, two pieces of zinc in the same ground would show the same deterioriation on the surface. In this case they look entirely different. One is heavily and deeply pitted; the other's corrosion is relatively even and smooth.

I am not sure how all three pins could just "rot away" and leave no trace. After all, they were fairly wide and made of the same material as the rest of the skull with the same material thickness. If they were there when it went into the ground, they should still be there...or at least some portion of them. They wouldn't all just fall off cleanly.

But if proof does arrive, all this will be very likely.
Even if the TKs are proven to be authentic, your scenario is still a huge stretch IMO.

The following is my personal fact list on the Assmann 3 prong. I have tried not to embellish it or to make opinionated claims to favor the skull.

        1. First appeared with original Assmann eagle on early Alteste caps in late 1960’s
        2. 3 separate people claim to have ground dug these in Eastern Europe
        3. Style is similar to other pieces of insignia from late war period with edge prongs.
        4. No hard evidence exists to substantiate that it was made after May45
        5. Quality is of a higher level and inconsistent with other fake skulls made in the late 1960’s period.
        6. Style closely resembles known original Assmann skull. Other fakes "of the 1960's period" were just fantasy interpretations at best.
        7. These skull appear to have become more and more scarce unlike other fakes that seem to show up more frequently as seen on the forum.

          1. First appeared virtually out of nowhere, in fairly large numbers with original Assmann eagles on early Alteste fake caps in late 1960’s.
          2. 3 separate people claim to have ground dug these in Eastern Europe only. None have been found with any direct provenance to Western veterans.
          3. Style is similar to the few other pieces of insignia from late war period with edge prongs, a style which was seen on no other SS insignia.
          4. No hard evidence exists to substantiate that it was made before May45
          5. Quality is of a higher level and inconsistent with most other fake skulls made in the late 1960’s period. Most Other fakes "of the 1960's period" were just fantasy interpretations at best. However, some fakes made close to or slightly after this period were of exceptional quality, which was equal to the best pieces produced during the peak of TR quality.
          6. Style closely resembles known original Assmann skulls, but exhibits features distinctly different than all other known original Assmann skulls.
          7. These skull appear to have become more and more scarce, just like all other old fakes, which are long since out of production.

I think that is a fairly reasonable list, but I would add some words to be truly balanced.

We could have a competition for a new name for you.

The winner gets to hammer three prongs onto your skull.

              I kid, I kid.......
