This illustration is from the Petz & Lorenz catalogue.
Look at the ring.
Exactly Robin, that's the one I was talking about. Whilst there has obviously been a certain amount of post photography touching up (airbrushing if you will) to these and most other period pictures of awards, I still believe that in most cases the pictures are quite a fair representation of the original awards. Take f,or example, the photo below from the 1939 Doehle book which clearly shows the 12 year SS Service Award with a round suspension ring...shown with an original example from my own collection which also has a round suspension ring...
There's more;
On closer examination of the reverse picture it becomes clear that this example is entirely different than every other original 12 year that has appeared on the Forum...except for the one pictured beside the photograph, which matches up perfectly in every detail. This would appear to dispell yet another WAF collector myth ie. that the 1st. & 2nd. grade SS Service Awards were only manufactured by one company. The medal shown is the only example of this type that I have seen, apart from a one 25 year which was sold a couple of years back by Malcom Fisher and was exactly the same in all respects apart from having a gilt finish.
To add to this subject, there was a thread posted on this forum many years ago which referred to the 3rd. & 4th. grades being manufactured by Otto Schickle and a picture was posted from his catalogue showing said medals. Unfortunately the picture has been removed and I did not have the foresight to save it.
