two pairs of officer boards

I've had these for a while, a bit salty. I'm interested in the forum's opinions on the yellow piped boards. It appears that there were panzer skulls present. Was this a post war addition? or was there legit boards with panzer skulls? Thanks Dexter

Thanks Besslein and Kirby, that thread is 47 pages long and about mostly Heer boards and tabs. Three collectors had officers boards with panzer skulls attached. I'll try and see if they can comment.

I think it was Heer 5th Cav that had the traditions skulls on their boards. I have never heard of them on SS boards, unless the boards were worn by a Heer officer. The skulls appear to have been on there an awful long time. We hear of SS wearing Heer boards...so I suppose the opposite is possible?

I'm not into SS so don't know about the 'regulations', but I would agree that those boards had metal skull devices on them for a very long time. Given the fact that the skull device was a 'standard' SS insignia, was used by the army as well, was readily available (it's in the Assmann & Sohne catalog), and that some units (at least in the army) used 'non-regulation' insignia, I'd give 'em a

I agree with Dave. Individual soldiers sometimes did things with their uniforms especially combatants what ever they fancied. This could be the case of a SS Cav Officer. The other two options would be the vet that picked it up or an early collector. Hard to say when, but "never" say never.

I've had the boards since the late 70's and this is how they came to me. I guess we can only speculate at this time. I've [personally] only seen one case of a Heer unit using SS insignia and that was a Heer peaked hat with an SS eagle. Speculation then was that the SS eagle was the only eagle available or the Army Officer wanted to show some connection with the SS units he might have been associated with [speculation now and back then], or collector applied of course. Skulls

TK Regiment Oberbayen used skull cyphers on shoulderbords from 1938-1940. They started with"O" but another unit started using the "O" so they switched to the skulls. ( article by Frank Thayer in the Military Advisor). I have only seen pictures of them worn on the old style black uniform boards, but it is possible that someone continued using them.
