I always thought those tunics and caps were interesting, but know absolutely nothing about them or the organizations.
Sorry can't add anything, but I think they are incredibly rare. Glad you got them off the estand. They will have a good home.

          Jerry,

Thanks...but the only one I got is the artillery piped cap. I missed the tunic, but at least I know what to look for now, but I'm still unsure what boards go with what tabs, or if its a mixture of tabs and boards. Only one has a good home, the rest are probably being mistreated and mothed...ha ha.

Richard, you are mixing apples and oranges with the period photos. Photo #1 and #3 are early photos of the Polizei Division (before the SS designation); the general is Mulverstadt who died in combat in Russia from a head shot. The mixture of insignia is because the division was a mix of police and other formations. But Mulverstadt's collar tabs were police general green as were his shoulder boards. Those officers wearing police insignia were members of the Ordnungspolizei and wore police green tabs and boards. I will check my copy of Die Guten Glauben Waren, the unit history of the police division, to see if the fellow with the soutache is identified. That is from where those photos were taken.

Photo #4 is of Police Obstlt. Griese and have nothing to do with the SS. He was not an SS officer. He was combat of Pol Rgt 14 that was later given the title SS-Pol Rgt. 14. His insignia is all police green.

              Joe,

Thanks, I knew it was very possible I was mixing stuff up. I had never seen a set of green backed police officer tabs with red inserts, I assume for artillery with Heer style artillery boards. I guess that's where my confusion starts, and in the photos the tab and board colors seemed to differ.

Thanks for trying to make some sense of these things, sorry about the mix-ups.

              Richard

                  Polizei HBT tunic

                  All,
This thread is a bit older, but I'd like to revisit for opinions. Why? Because this tunic is currently for sale. I have it in my home for review and I'm wondering if some experienced SS cloth collectors could comment. The sleeve eagle has been reapplied. It is a Heer flatware officers eagle. Any estimates on value? Any and all comments would be greatly appreciated. Please PM me if anyone wants to comment directly. Thanks, Dan

                    Clarification on my wording

To all members and the moderator: please let me clarify my comment on this tunic being for sale. I am not breaking the rules and offering this for sale. I am currently inspecting it so that I may possibly purchase it from a private seller, not on the forum or estand in any way. I'm looking for comments on the tunic before I buy it. Can anyone out there share your opinion of the tunic? Thanks again, Dan

The heer eagle would not match what was once removed from it.

                        drempfer,

Frankly, I am not sure what this particular tunic is. What I am certain of is that it is entirely non-regulation for either the SS or the Police. I suggest you link this discussion to the Police Forum for some more opinions since you think it might be from the SS-Police Division.

If you are considering buying this tunic you would do well to figure out what it is, or is not, before you do so. While it is possible that a tunic like this might have been worn by the early Polizei Division it is not probable IMHO. As John Pic says, a Heer eagle on the arm is not a proper replacement for the stitch holes so this restoration is of no value whatsoever. You should probably pay no more than the value of the parts at this point in time. Others may have different opinions however.

                        I hope this is helpful.

I used to own that tunic. I never found an eagle to match stich holes to restore it and sold it without it. It is a very nice decent combat light weight HBT tunic. Except eagle all other insignia seems period applied: rare police tabs and army boards.

The collar tabs on the tunic in question are not police regulation. Regulation Police Officer tabs do not have the center colored Waffenfarbe in the aluminum litzen as do Heer tabs. In Police Officer collar tabs, the center of the bullion litzen are woven bullion wire with no colored thread applied. The police organization branch color is determined by the color of the backing such as green, orange, grey, etc.

While the photograph at the beginning of this thread shows a Police Officer with colored Waffefarben in his collar tabs and on his Schiffchen, this was not regulation. The collar tabs on the hbt tunic also have a very light colored green backing, while Schupo backing is dark green and not this odd color. So again, I have no idea what the collar tabs are supposed to be but they are not regulation police tabs.

Never say never... but a fellow who is asking for information ought to be able to know what he is buying IMHO.

Before they were fully incorporated into the W-SS, for some reason the Polizei Division always raises questions and causes confusion. Very likely due to its relatively short existence and initially mixed use of Heer/SS/Polizei uniforms, insignia and headgear.

I used to own this tunic for a while as well and although perhaps this appears to be a hot potato, I can assure you it is not. I fully subscribe to the above assessment, it is a great and rare tunic that just needs a fine SS officer sleeve eagle to complete it.

Please also bear in mind that the nucleus for the first Artillery Rgt. in the Polizei Division (NOT SS until feb 1942) came from the Heer, therefore the use of Heer shoulderboards is also totally explainable.

@ Drempfer: don't hesitate to send me a PM if you have any further questions.

                              F.
