Here are some decent pics tho trying to get the color correct is difficult. I don't know what was done to this bag over the years but the color varies from orange to a dark brown. What I did was to put some shoe polish only on several open leather wounds on the bag using my finger which gives me a lot of control over amount and location in the interest of preservation. I have not done anything with the rest of the bag or the straps which are in more of a deterioration state. And it appears that, if any polish was applied previously, the cotton threads were left alone.
1. When is preservation acceptable vs an alteration of originality?
2. When preservation is too late is restoration permissible if it also allows a prevention of further deterioration eg, gluing, patching, bridging broken leather?
3. Preservation using something like Noxal will loosen and lubricate leather fibers but, of course, will not grow them back. Cracks in the surface will become more obvious since the leather fibers are now lubricated. What do members of this forum recommend for preservation and restoration where, eg, a strap is deteriorated into separate pieces?
4. What is more important when push comes to shoved - preservation, restoration or maintaining originality even if it means further deterioration to eventual worthlessness?
There does not appear to be an umlaut in oberfuhrer on this saddle bag.
1. I have noticed that there is no umlaut in the example shown here of a dispatch case from the Goring Regiment over the "o" in Goring which is offered by The Ruptured Duck. The other Goring stamp is not clear enough to ascertain any umlaut. Please note the other 2 spelling examples of "Goring" - plague Snyder site, signature Gottlieb site

2. The Hotel Metropole label, which appears to be genuine and contemporary with the bag, may have been the headquarters for the unit to which Borchert belonged. The hotel exists today and at the same address.
Borchert was promoted to oberfuehrer on about Feb 2, 1943. His unit was stationed in;
Eastern Front from Jun 41 - May 43,
Czech and Poland from May 43 - Jan 44,
Greece from Jan 44 - Sept 44,
Yugoslavia and Romania from Sept 44 - Oct 44,
Hungary from Oct 44 - Dec 44 and
Czech and E. Germany from Dec 44 - May 45.
Not knowing when the saddle was embossed, can one assume it was done closer to his promotion rather than toward the end of the war?
3. Would the name and SS emblem on an item like this be a factory or personal application?
4. If personally done and if done elsewhere than in Germany, would an umlaut character been available?
5. The lettering are impressed into the leather as well as the rim of the SS cartouche but the runes do not appear to have been stamped enough so as to look as if it were only printed.
6. Not verified at this time: born Dec 5, 1891, died April 27,1969 Served as infantry lieutenant in WWI, Schutz Polizei between wars, joined SS July 1, 1939 as obersturmbahnfuehrer
