There seems to be a Chicago - California connection.

This is the short story of this hat...there was a shop in New York called the CRACKED POT run by guys named Scaglione and Sevier. I always trusted these guys and liked them because they would always have time to chat with us teenagers. They would send out lists and you bought items cold based on their reputation. This hat is item 42.

The Cracked Pot still exists, run by Bob Sevier out of Buffalo New York. He still sells via a subscriber-only mail out list, and still enjoys the same reputation of simple, honest integrity. His lists aren't packed with unbelievable glamour items, but everything on them is worth a look...

Having said that, I turn to this hat...its a wild one, and looks nothing like we're used to seeing for Waffen SS NCO hats. The two things which stand out are the ribbed gabardine capband and the cord piping, very odd, but I've seen them both (never in combination, and never with coloured piping, so far) in VT caps...The very earliest VT fieldgray caps were identical to the black versions save for the cloth above and below the cap band, which differed only in colour, and they had this exact cap band...anyway, more opinions from others will fill out the consensus on this cap...

                      Hi all,

based on the foto's, I have my doubts. As already stated, I do not like the black cap band and the white Litzen. Hands-on inspction could change my opinion...
But fot that price I would certainly buy it and take the risk!!

I've been getting Bob's lists since the mid 70's, and saved most of them, I would imagine this list is from the late 70's maybe a bit earlier. In my opinion, Bob, who was (is) always the cloth man of the Cracked Pot when it was with Chuck, probably knows more than many of the collectors on this forum, myself included. If that offends anyone, well, I believe it to be the truth, and he's been doing this long before the age of the "mega" dealer and started in an era when this stuff was more or less, of little value. I'm sure Bob has made some mistakes, but I bet you can count them on one or two hands at most regarding being "fooled". If Bob liked it, that would be 99 percent confirmation for me. If Bob said he got it from the Vet, I'd take him at his word, without hesitation. He has never had an "ego" to the best of my knowledge which needed any wide berth, and he's one of the most honest persons in this hobby I've ever dealt with. I won't say hes very honest, one either is honest or not, Bob is.

I like the cap and also the story in the description..What i most enjoy is back then this was a saly dog with a low price.. Nowadays you could charge a premium price for a grizzeled COMBAT vet such as this..I could just see this being picked up after a pile of SS prisoners have been processed near the end of the war... I'm on the positive side for this one with Bob's reputation making up for what I lack in knowledge on the subject. The "Cracked Pot" was the source for original items back in the day. and sounds like it still is. Congratulations on your cap and keeping it safe all these years.
